There are reports that besides reducing tremors, the drug may also help improve concentration and memory. A serendipitous discovery was that the drug also improved mood and thus Selegiline is now available as a patch for the treatment of endogenous depression. Currently the drug is also being evaluated as an aid to stop smoking.
When Selegiline is taken orally, it is broken down in the body to some potent metabolites which are also thought to possess brain stimulant activity. One of the metabolites is similar in structure to amphetamine.
Selegiline is a relatively safe drug but there are some dietary restrictions. In the USA a doctor's prescription is required for the use of the drug. It is the drug of choice for the treatment of Parkinson patients and works well.
