Donepezil

Donepezil is a drug which has been around for about 10 years. The drug also known as Aricept is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It acts in the brain where it increases the levels of a neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. Because it stays in the body for a long time, individuals are always started on a low dose to being with and assessed for side effects. There have been many studies done on the benefits of Donepezil.

During the early stages dementia, Donepezil has been shown to improve cognition, memory and behavior. Recently, clinical trails indicate that the drug when taken for more than 1-2 years can prevent progression of dementia and may be of benefit to some patients with severe Alzheimer's.

Today, there are various studies which are investigating the role of Donepezil in other dementias. The drug is now frequently combined with other nootropics because there is some evidence that a combination therapy may be superior in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
