DMAE is very similar in structure to the chemical choline, which is a precursor for the synthesis of acetylcholine- a neurotransmitter. Like choline, DMAE is converted into the brain into a "pseudotransmitter". DMAE is also naturally found in some canned food like sardines.
While the product has no medical use, it is known to increase alertness and improve the mood in people who take it. There are plenty of anecdotal reports which indicate that DMAE can improve concentration, decrease the need for sleep and improve cognition. However, there have been no controlled studies to fully evaluate these claims.
DMAE is sold as pill all over the internet. It is a 150mg pill which is supposed to be taken daily to improve memory and cognition. While no significant side effects have been reported, caution is required when combining this agent with other nutrients or medicines.
