Bupropion

Bupropion is also known as Wellbutrin or Zyban. It has been around for at least a decade. The drug was initially synthesized to treat depression. However, research showed that the drug also had some unusual properties - it was found that Bupropion could cause weight loss and also decreased the urge to smoke.

Because of the drugs' ability to aid smokers in quitting the habit, Bupropion became one of the most prescribed drugs of the past decade. Even though the drug has decent anti depressant activity, it is now marketed as an aid to quit smoking. When used by smokers, it does decrease the cravings for nicotine and reduces withdrawal symptoms.

Unlike the classic anti depressants, Bupropion does not cause any weight gain or a loss in libido. Other uses of Bupropion include treatment of seasonal mood disorder and as a mood stabilizer. The drug is available in various formulations as a pill. The standard dose of the drug is 300 mg daily.

While there have been reports of Bupropion causing seizures, at the doses prescribed the chance of seizure are negligible.
